In many areas, turbulent weather occurs during the months of spring. Our son was young when our family experienced turbulence during a tremendous thunderstorm that caused our electricity to shut off. When the noise from the crashing thunder caused our little boy to wake up to total darkness in our home, he began crying and screaming loudly.

My husband went to our boy's room and brought him into our bigger bedroom where the head of our bed was up against a window that looked out on the street. I opened the drapes while my husband stood our son up on the bed to show him that ours was not the only house on our street without electricity. However, our child wouldn't stop screaming in order to hear what I said. Instead, he continued to shriek. If he had taken a deep breath, he would have been able to hear my soothing words.

Something similar happens on a spiritual level with us as believers when worldly circumstances block out the illumination that God provides. In such a situation, we may become so frantic that our loud babblings may prevent us from hearing the quiet assurance that God gives us.

The Bible reminds us, in 2 Timothy 1:7 that fear does not come from God. Instead, He is our Source of power, of love, and of a sound mind. I prefer the translation that says "a sound mind" because that infers that God's provision enables us to remain mentally stable during times of chaos and terror and prevents us from allowing ourselves to become overwhelmed with fear.

In the same way that the thunderstorm passed that night and our electrical power was restored, all of the terrors of daily living will pass away like a nocturnal thunderstorm that disappears before dawn when we remain focused on our Eternal Source of Power.

Prayer: Guiding Lord, please provide the peace that passes understanding so that I am able to receive Your calm assurance that the turbulence around me is temporary and will pass. I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
