As seasons change, the atmosphere around us begins to alter. In autumn, the days grow shorter, the air becomes cooler, plants that were with us all summer droop and fade while wildflowers that we haven't seen earlier now appear. Leaves on trees turn gold and red before they fall to the ground. Pumpkins appear in the markets, on front porches, and seemingly everywhere.

The changes within us may be more gradual. Our skin may show signs of being dry and flaky. As the temperature drops, we may pull out a blanket from the closet where it has been reposing all summer, shake it open, and put it on the bed underneath the bedspread. We exchange sandals for warm socks and shoes. When we see neighbors putting fall decorations on their doors and gates, we may search our shelves for some of our own.

The thought of soup, salad, and cornbread for supper seems inviting. With that in mind, I may pull out a recipe for making soup from scratch rather than opening a can of soup.

Although the changes in the world around us and in us may be apparent, it is comforting to know that Jesus never changes. He is constant and consistent. The Bible reassures us of that in Hebrews 13:8, which reminds us that "Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday and today and forever." (NIV)

The seasons will continue to change throughout the year, but Jesus never does. We can count on Him.
