Although some may call our furnishings "old", we like to think of them as "vintage". [Photographer: Mary Hunt Webb*.]

Each time my family and I leave our house, we ask the Lord to watch over our dwelling. We trust that He has angels watching over it. That may have been what happened when we returned home from church one evening to find the door to our home was open. Because I knew I had locked and closed that door, it was clear our house had been burgled. However, when we entered, there was no one inside and nothing had been stolen. Only two things had been disturbed. We trust that the Lord had posted angels on duty in accordance with our request so that they had frightened the burglar away. It's possible that the angels caused the would-be thief to look around our home and realize, "This stuff is so old that there's nothing here worth stealing!"

It's true that we tend to make the best use of what we have before we purchase new items. Our parents grew up during the Great Depression so that they impressed on us the importance of recycling before it became trendy. The concept is an old one.

The Bible mentions the importance of using what one has when it says, "Lazy people don't even cook the game they catch, but the diligent make use of everything they find." (Proverbs 12:27, NLT) The emphasis here is on making good use of what one has.

A motto that appeared frequently during the difficult days of World War II recommended, "Use it up; wear it out; make it do, or do without." Although we didn't grow up during that time period, one way we "make it do" is to repair whatever we can or find someone that can repair it. When a co-worker complemented me on a favorite purse, I mentioned that I had just had it repaired at a shoe repair shop. She remarked, "Oh, I would have just thrown it away!" I realized that I had instinctively made the comparison and decided that the cost of repair seemed less than the price of a new purse of that quality.

I understand now that I have observed the creativity of older generations to turn unused objects into garden planters or to incorporate ribbons and other small items into future decorations. Younger generations are watching us as well to gain insight into how well we recycle.

Another way we make good use of what we have is to wear aprons when we repair our possessions or cook our food. That keeps our clothes in good condition and makes them last longer.

My husband and I believe that when we make good use of what we have, God then blesses us with more so that we are able to give to others as Jesus advised in Luke 6:38, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (NIV)

When we use our possessions wisely, take care of those that we have, and give to others, we become part of God's ministry.
